JESUS called those He wanted to follow Him and they had to climb a mountain right at the start. When you get to the top of a mountain and look back you see the way you came. We often see the disciples in a poor light when they fail, but at this point we can see what a great privilege they had. Jesus wanted them to be with Him (v 14). They would hear all His sermons and witness all the miracles. They would have first hand experience of His power. Then Jesus wanted them to go away from Him and continue His work. Having learnt from Him they were to preach His gospel to all people (v 14). Finally, He would give them the power He had over the forces of evil in the world (v 15).
The twelve were ordinary men and yet they have become famous throughout the world and their fame has lasted more than two thousand years. We only know about them because of Him Whom they served. Theirs is “Fame by association” and what an association! Jesus appointed them. He changed their names in some cases. He changed their natures, and their occupations. Their family lives were reorganised. He demanded total loyalty from them and gave them so much in return.
Now think about your own life and your meeting with Jesus. Has He changed things for you? Have you allowed Him to do so? Have you let Him into your every day Monday-to-Saturday world or do you keep Him for a Sunday? There is one last thing to consider before closing your Bible. Read the last name on the list again and note what he did. Judas was called. He was sent out to preach and given authority over demons, but in the end he betrayed Jesus. What a fearful prospect! Let’s ask God today to keep us safe from this kind of deceit.
